Brief history

It’s 2017 and I’m participating in Miss Supranational… I don’t know I’m gonna be top 10 and win the Americas Supranational crown.

Were in rehearsal and the crazy miss daily agenda when some of the girls and I are watching Miss Grand International Preliminary.

“Thailand is gonna win…” “No, Philippines” “Come on girls, clearly is Czech Republic” some girls say… I watch Peru go out the stage and point “If Peru wins, my next pageant is Miss Grand International” I mean, I saw her national costume performance and CHECK, her swimsuit preliminary, um hello, the hair move? CLEVER and of course her major preliminary gown performance that is what I define as pure PERFECT!!!

Well she won, obviously, I didn’t expect less from a serious man like Mr. Nawat as it’s heard around the circle…

“Holly Molly” crossed my mind at first after watching the results, “I guess I better start finding out how to win Costa Rica’s representation”.

How it happened.

Here’s the thing about Costa Rica’s beauty pageant industry: there isn’t really one but I’m determined to contribute to make it happen. We have ALL the potential and hello, our women are the most beautiful in Central America and even the world, that summed up to the fact the we truly are a peaceful nation as we don’t have an army and hold the Interamerican Human Rights Court which makes us eligible to represent beauty.

However, the world moves according to money and power and we don’t really represent any of those in the sense that we find other things like happiness, environment, love and respect more important than power and I think that has affected us in international platforms such as football and beauty pageants where these elements are very influential.

Our motto is “pura vida” (pure life) for a reason and is that we actually like living life without obsessing over goods and money.

I sincerely believe that the world would be better if contagiated with more of this lifestyle us “ticos” have.

Anyway, how it happened is quite unique and special I contacted the previous owner of the franchise in CR back in January and he said “I have the next three years fully booked” as there is no competition made for this or any beauty pageant in Costa Rica but Miss CR Universe (yep, I know)… So I thought that was it, well not really I’m quite ambitious and stubborn, I do A N Y T H I N G for a goal (with ethics and moral compass to guide me) so I started reviewing my options but acknowledging the obstacles in front of me.

Turns out my dad is Spanish. I kept close relationship and traveled back and forth to Spain and in one of my trips it hit me “why don’t you participate with your Spanish nationality?”

You guys, I so did, haha… Against peoples mean opinions, since there’s a hate speech against anyone considered “migrant”, it was so eye opening, you see I worked in an agency of United Nations that helps refugees and migrants and I never thought I would be one day in their shoes, it was a very humbling experiencing bust importantly a motivating one, I sincerely want to address topics like this as a beauty ambassador.

So well, I moved to Madrid (AMAZING  experience) I participated in the province contest which was also the capital: MADRID and I won (yay), went to the national pageant, met miss Teresa and Maria Jose Lora (It was so so so exciting, really) and well did an awesome participation where I got a 2nd finalist result.

I was a little (ok, fine, very) sad also mad haha, is just I’m scorpion, so I think it’s part of my nature. And I thought, what now?

Inside me it felt like there was still a chance… So I participated in another contest with my Spanish nationality… Haters will say que necia (what stubborn) I think this is how anyone should pursue a dream, just no hesitation… and well I got 1 finalist at Miss International Spain… However, the owner Julio Battaglia (awesome person) told me he’s gonna ask for Costa Rica’s Miss Grand Intl franchise as he says he believes 100% I belong to the pageant and well he actually did, he found out the franchise recently changed owner and I immediately started talking to some people.

I was still finding out the new owner when I got a call “I have miss Grand International CR I will have an open casting but I’m sure you won’t have competition”

*^&%^^$ WHAT ARE THE ODDS, rights???????? You guys I was in Spain literally with vacations booked for Ibiza and supposedly gonna return to Madrid and I just booked everything back to cr… Of course after the one week at Ibiza..

We met, Gerson Jimenez and I at his open casting call and after relating my performance in Spain and everything I learnt, etc he granted me the golden ticket. (Yes I did a happy dance maybe sometime I’ll show you in my YouTube channel)

COUNTDOWN: ONLY ONE MONTH TO PREPARE.

Well, remember I said I’m ambitious and stubborn? If anything that’s a good thing, at least for me.

So with literally 30 days to prepare I had to find an incredible national costume, preliminary costume, clothes, jewelry, shoes, ask for a visa, send the requested footage, do official shooting, cocktail crowning party and MANY MANY things with some challenges other countries don’t have like brands support and such…

THANK GOD since January I had teamed up with a designer in Lebanon to do my dress…  It was epic experience as everything was online, I had to send cash through the designer’s friend (scary, risky, don’t follow at home!!), decide fabrics, not a single time we met and this gorgeous gold jewel was perfect when it arrived to Spain.

EVERYTHING about the process was different, the shipping to Spain, the sketch making, fabric selection, measurements but it was so worth it.

This insanely gorgeous piece is inspired in MGI crown with over 100 k Swarovski crystals, 10 k bronze gems and 15beautiful souls put their hard work and after 2 months of making Nisrine Ziades gorgeous dress arrived perfect.

**Just quick commercial: if you’re perceptive like me and your gut is sharp as mine, follow your freaking heart… if I would’ve listened to people that love me I wouldn’t have had this dress as they said it was too precipitated and this is people that love me that want the best for me but only YOU truly know yourself, your needs, where you’re heading in life…

Back to the story. So for the national costume I instantly contacted Erick Bendaña from Nicaragua with whom we decided to do something on gold to keep the line.

A stunning indigenous goddess inspirational costume was agreed. He flew to Miami where he got the materials and for over three weeks worked in this master piece. A belt to represent women’s reproductive system and cycle was added as I’m very aware of the taboos behind our natural processes and love love to talk about them… I was extremely happy for this costume. My national director and I added a crystal made peace symbol as tribute for the “Stop the War and Violence” campaign.

As for the clothing and such, this will sound impossible and I think it could’ve been but Swarovki sponsored me in one week of negotiation and so did premium Costa Rican brand Britt and Brazilian shoe brand Modare. This is a first time for any costarricense (feeling honored) and it was incredible to count with their support with literally a week to talk about it.

We managed to do everything that was requested from the International Org. And only packing was left, I did some awesome videos (like six, that usually takes like at least a couple months but we did in days).

PACKING

I think theres no need for a lot of words, only want to highlight it was requested to fit a Miss wardrobe and gigantic national costume in two luggages and a carry on (I don’t know how I did it either)
